O’Neill feels Sunderland got their just deserts
Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has praised his side after they beat QPR 3-2 at Loftus Road on Wednesday, and feels that an away win was a fair result.
Nicklas Bendtner and Stephane Sessegnon gave The Black Cats a commanding 2-0 lead, but Neil Warnock’s men drew level through strikes from Heidar Helguson and Jamie Mackie.
Wes Brown popped up with the winner in the 89th minute, and despite the late nature of sealing the victory O’Neill feels his team deserved to win.
“I am naturally absolutely delighted,” he told Sky Sports.
“We had a great response tonight. At 2-0, we were in a great position to win and eventually we won it twice.
“But all’s well that ends well and we won the game. And given the number of chances we had, I thought that we deserved to do so,” he admitted.
Warnock however did not agree with O’Neill’s assessment of the match, and feels that the hosts should have got at least a point.
“If you are beaten by a better side or by a fantastic goal you put your hand up,” he said.
“I think we were the better side. We showed some real guts and determination tonight. I can’t believe we lost that game,” he concluded.
